~ blogging my fangirl-ness

I can read hangul, understand basic phrase, can catch up easy and common dialogue, and obviously: can use online dictionary, lol. That’s it. People say it’s learning by doing, so here I am… Feel free to correct my translation work. This is my own practice ground, so take everything with huge grain of salt. Lol. Thanks~

[SPAZZ] Spread the “Reply 1997” Love~ ^^

Nostalgia pieces always wrestle with the dichotomy of referential zeal and passion for the subject. From their inception, trendy dramas amalgamated the two concepts into a whole — one which soon began to crumble, replaced by crass commodification and not-so-noble motives (creating creatively bankrupt and easily marketable pap for undemanding viewers, based on the same one-trick-pony mechanisms). This little show harkens back to what made trendy dramas different and special: it has heart and silliness by the truckload, but the referential zeal and realistic intangibles to back it up in a glorious way. A monumental surprise, in every conceivable way.  — Dramatic about “Reply 1997”

It’s official: the 90’s are back! The warm glow of nostalgia lights up this delightful high school drama following a group of friends through those halcyon days of — you guessed it — the last glorious decade of the 20th century. This sweet drama is sure to please anyone who has fond memories of innocent kpop, Guess t-shirts and Super Nintendo. Starring Jung Eun Ji of the kpop group APink, Seo In Gook (Love Rain), and Shin So Yool, and with cameo appearances from former K-pop idol stars such as Eun Ji Won of Sechs Kies, and Kim Jong Min of Koyote!

And how I fell in love with it…

1) A-Pink’s Eunji. Eunji’s acting in her first sitcom is surprising, I never expect her, or any acting-dol, to be this good. Her performance is solid from the very beginning, unlike many newbies who are too self conscious and look awkward on screen whatever they do. Even Eunjung and UEE, acting-dols I like, couldn’t do this in their first attempt. Eunji’s (and company’s) smart choice of choosing character is one thing, but her ability to let loose of herself and gives Sung Siwon a solid character is another thing.
2) Visual (editing/directing). This show screenplay is pretty, like, really really pretty. Anyone else watch tvN variety show “The Romantic”? This sitcom has the same vibe with it.
3) Writing. The writing is full of various surprises, like Harry Potter’s “Any Flavor Beans”. It’s cute, it’s funny, it’s sweet, it’s heart-warming, it’s annoying, it’s frustrating, it’s thrilling, it’s…. everything.

Three words for you: Go. Watch. It.
